Get Ready For The #BodyKindness Revolution!

August 6th, 2017 by Sara Upson

This is a review that I wrote about Body Kindness for IFEDD, The International Federation of Eating Disorder Dietitians.  I am sharing it here, because I think the book is so fantastic that I want even more people to know about it.  The review is written with dietitians in mind, however the information is relative to anyone.  You can find the original review here under the members only section of IFEDD.  If you’re a dietitian and you’d like to join, it’s only $25 for dietitians and $10 for students.  It’s an amazing organization!

Since writing this review for IFEDD, Body Kindness has earned a permanent spot on the side table in my office.  If you’ve been in my office, then you know this stack of books sits right next to me.  They’re a compilation of my favorite and most used resources for making peace with food.  Body Kindness is right there in the mix of amazing books.    It truly is one of my favorites and I think it is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about Intuitive Eating & Health At Every Size (plus much more) in a broader context.

Body Kindness: Transform Your Health from the Inside Out–and Never Say Diet Again

By Rebecca Scritchfield, Published November 2016

Rebecca Scritchfield’s new book Body Kindness is going to lead the way for a self compassionrevolution. Body Kindness is a book that combines Intuitive Eating with the principles of Health At Every Size, shame resilience from Brene Brown, and principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and values-based living to create change. In essence, it expands Intuitive Eating to Intuitive Living. If your clients are ready to stop dieting and start living but struggle with obstacles this book aligns their goals with their values to create serious life improvement! As an eating disorder dietitian I think this is a book you and your clients will be using for years to come. It is certainly a book that has been much needed in the literature to combine so many different counseling theories and principles into one easily digestible resource.

The author, Rebecca Scritchfield, is a Master’s level Registered Dietitian and an ACSM certified health coach. She combines her wide range of expertise in Body Kindness to cover all aspects of well-being which of course include nutrition and exercise, as well as sleep habits, emotional health, making room for fun, values-based living, self-acceptance, sex, and positive relationships. Of note, this book does contain adult content and may not be appropriate for younger clients.

A key concept of Body Kindness is learning how to Spiral Up. We are well aware how one or two actions or thoughts can create a downward spiral that leads to increased harmful thoughts and behaviors. Scritchfield turns this concept around with the novel idea of spiraling up instead. She demonstrates throughout the book how one or two small thoughts or behaviors can grow into an upward spiral that provides powerful energy and boosts your mood. There are multiple prompts and journaling activities included throughout the book to help you and your clients get started.

Body Kindness is enjoyable to read thanks to Scritchfield’s ability to balance facts and figures with unexpected humor. And while we don’t judge a book by it’s cover, it would be remiss not to mention that the book itself is absolutely beautiful. It has stunning infographics throughout the book, the design and layout is very aesthetically pleasing, and even the paper it’s printed on just feels good in your hands!

I highly recommend Body Kindness for professionals as it combines so many of the core philosophies that we already use into one resource with new language and ideas that we can share with our clients. I also highly recommend it for your clients who are ready to stop dieting and start living. This book and the #BodyKindness Revolution will create change, improve lives and empower health through kindness and self-compassion.

Body Kindness: Transform Your Health from the Inside Out–and Never Say Diet Again is available in paperback and for Kindle at Amazon.

[…] Listen to your body– eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full, choose foods that sound pleasing to you. It’s simple, but so hard at the same time. Especially when everyone around you is commenting on their food, their eating, their body. Don’t be sucked into what others are saying about that- it’s all from diet culture and diet culture doesn’t know you or what you need. (And quite frankly it doesn’t even care about you or what you need.) You know yourself best and by staying true to you, taking care of you… you will feel better.   That may be honoring hunger, fullness and satisfaction, or it may be following your meal plan and making sure you take the next right step for eating disorder recovery. There’s not one right way for what it means- but it is taking a step that honors you and cares for you. You could ask yourself- how can I best care for myself right now? Or as Rebecca Scritchfield says in Body Kindness- what is the kindest thing I could do for myself ri… […]
