Are you comfortable with your eating?
2/15/2015 1:07:07 PM

Take a moment to think about it- are you comfortable with your eating?  How much time do you spend thinking about food or your body?

Yes, Hunger Will Do That To You!
7/13/2014 10:09:09 AM

You’ve probably heard of hangry by now, you know...when you’re so hungry you become angry…where you end up snapping at friends and family and biting someone’s head off because you really need a snack or meal.  Did you know that hangry is not the only emotional response of hunger?

Holiday Enjoyment Guide
11/13/2013 11:08:13 PM

I’m tired of all the blogs and articles on surviving the holidays.  It makes what is supposed to be a very exciting, joyous time of the year sound like a horrible experience that you just need to get through while barely hanging on.  People survive cancer, wars, famine, and natural disasters.  How does surviving get attached to the holidays?  Yes, I know that there is a lot of stress around the holidays, and I realize that it is a difficult time of year for many people.  I acknowledge that there are certain life events that make the holidays harder, however when there’s a holiday survival guide for everything under the sun, it has to make you wonder what is so bad about the holidays that we just need to survive?  I can’t help but wonder- what would happen if we shifted our focus from surviving the holidays to actually enjoying them?    What if changing the way we think about the holidays affected the way we felt and reacted too?  With that in mind here is my Holiday Enjoyment Guide (it sounds better already):

Trick or Treating With The Dietitian
10/30/2013 10:56:48 AM

As a dietitian many people ask me every year what I give out for Halloween.  I get a lot of- “you probably don’t even give out candy.”  However, let me assure you that I, the dietitian/nutritionist, do give out candy and I even eat it too!

RD≠FPD
4/18/2013 12:25:32 AM

Many of people believe that as a dietitian I am a member of the FPD- the Food Police Department.  A lot people think that dietitians are the food police, going around passing judgment of people and what’s on their plate or in their shopping cart at the grocery store.  Others think we take the joy out of life by forbidding juicy, mouthwatering burgers and smooth, creamy turtle cheesecake and replacing them with carrot sticks or tofu instead.  Even worse, others think that we look at people and judge them based on their size.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth!  Yet it’s almost daily that I hear- “Don’t judge me about what I’m eating.” “Don’t look at my shopping cart.” or “Don’t judge me based on my size!”  This is not what dietitians do!

RD Day & National Nutrition Month
3/13/2013 3:23:36 PM

If you’ve ever looked into special holidays and observances you will know that there is one for practically every day of the year.  Some are respected and traditional holidays while some are silly, strange, or well deserved.  For example, in March there is St. Patrick’s Days but there’s also pi day (3/14), Corn Dog Day (3/23), and Registered
Dietitian Day (3/13).

Health Benefits of Chocolate
2/8/2013 2:12:39 PM

According to the National Confectioner’s Association more than 36 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentines Day!  This makes Valentines Day the fourth biggest holiday for candy purchases behind Halloween, Easter, and Christmas. With the increasing research on the benefits of chocolate there is some good news behind all this chocolate consumption.

New Years Resolutions
1/3/2013 12:49:34 PM

Happy 2013!  As we begin the New Year many people resolve to make changes for a better future.  Resolutions can be quite broad but according to research anywhere from 40-80% of Americans make a similar resolution.  I don’t think it takes much guessing to figure out what that resolution is, but if you guessed weight loss, getting fit, or getting toned- then you would be correct.

Weight Loss Confusion
12/14/2012 10:58:33 PM

If you are looking for information about weight loss you are probably overwhelmed by all of the choices and conflicting information available to you.  I think this is true for pretty much everywhere, but I see it first hand with weight loss in Tyler, Texas.

Surviving the Holidays
11/15/2012 3:58:18 PM

The holidays are approaching and many people are looking forward to joyous celebrations with their friends and family.  For you this may be carving the turkey, dining around the table, finding that perfect gift, wrapping the presents, or decorating the tree.  For many people with this excitement also comes much apprehension. On one hand the holidays are a festive celebration and on the other hand there’s the holiday weight gain followed by the New Years weight loss resolution.  I’m sure each year everyone vows that this year will be different- that visions of sugar plum regret will not dance in your head.  Let me assure you that it is possible to navigate the holidays, enjoy the celebrations, and maintain your normal weight.

Tricks To Enjoy Your Halloween Treats
10/30/2012 1:31:44 PM

Happy Halloween! Halloween is celebrated by millions of people and is a fun time for dressing up and for kids to go door-to-door trick-or-treating resulting in large amounts of candy!  For the kids this is great, for the parents sometimes Halloween can turn into a nutrition nightmare.  As a parent you work all year long to try and instill good nutrition and healthy eating habits with your kids.  It might feel like this one-day of the year comes around and ruins it all.  Let me assure you that one day of splurging on candy- even one week of eating candy will not ruin years of work on healthy eating.  The same is true for you too!  However, if you find yourself reaching for the candy bowl too frequently, or if you are concerned about you kid’s candy consumption then read on for some tricks on how to enjoy your Halloween treats.

Healthy Food vs. Healthy Eating
4/23/2012 10:30:51 AM

If I asked you to make a list of healthy food, most people would likely be able to do this pretty easily.  You might even list something like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish, etc.  If I asked you to list or describe what healthy eating was, most people would recite the same list of healthy foods- fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish, etc.  However, healthy food and healthy eating are not the same thing.

Good Food & Bad Food
4/9/2012 11:27:34 AM

Normally when you read an article about good and bad food you will find a list of which foods are good and which foods are bad, or maybe which foods you should or should not eat.  Dividing foods into these categories to create a “healthy diet” may seem like an easy way to select foods, however this way of thinking can negatively impact your relationship with food and potentially your overall diet.  In truth there is no such thing as good food or bad food.
