I can’t believe that Thanksgiving is already here!  Where did time go?  It’s usually around this time that I start seeing news articles pop up that attempt to steal the joy from Thanksgiving by focusing on how many calories people eat, how “bad” the food is, how it’s too much, that the weight gain season has begun, that remind shame you on how much weight people gain, etc.  The Thanksgiving headline that annoys me the most says something like “America Binges on Thanksgiving.”  Repeat after me: “We do not all Binge Eat on Thanksgiving.”

Binge Eating Disorder Is Real 9/18/2016 4:12:15 PM

 

I have recently seen a series of different commentaries or editorials on “illness inflation” and “lowering the bar in medicine” that specifically mention Binge Eating Disorder (BED).  These editorials make it sound like BED is a made up disease that you have if you suddenly eat a “few too many cookies.”  As a clinician who sees first hand the devastating effect of binge eating disorder and the impact that it can have on quality of life, it makes me sad at how misunderstood this illness is.  It’s frustrating for me, but it is stigmatizing and shameful for someone who suffers from BED to read that their illness isn’t “real.”  When you’re struggling to stop thinking about food, feel ashamed in your body, afraid to eat because you’re worried you won’t be able to stop, it makes you feel like you have to hide your behaviors even more- which makes the eating disorder worse.

Yes- You Do Need A Treatment Team! 4/3/2015 11:43:55 PM

 

Did you know that a multidisciplinary treatment team is the gold standard for eating disorder treatment?  According to medicaldictionary.com a gold standard is “an acknowledged measure of comparison of the superior effectiveness or value of a particular medication or other therapy as compared with that of other drugs or treatments.”   Come again? Basically it’s saying that the gold standard, in this case a multidisciplinary treatment team for eating disorders, is superior to other treatments (i.e. only working with one clinician).

Eating disorders are the deadliest mental illness and require specialized care.  That means just because someone is a doctor (including psychiatrists), counselor, psychologist, dietitian, or any other health provider- it doesn’t mean they know about eating disorders.

Recovered does not mean 'Eating Disorder Expert' 3/18/2015 10:59:53 AM

I am seeing a trend in the area that goes like this: “I have recovered from an eating disorder, therefore I am an eating disorder expert.”   How scary is that?  That’s like saying- I had brain surgery therefore I am an expert in brain surgery, or I had cancer therefore I am an expert in cancer, or I lost weight therefore I am a weight loss specialist (that one’s all too common) or I flew on an airplane therefore I know how to fly one.  Of course when we look at it that way, it’s ridiculous!  When I think about the fact that eating disorders are the deadliest mental illness and that “the risk of death is three times higher than in depression, schizophrenia, or alcoholism and 12 times higher than in the general population"1 it really scares me.  It scares me for all those individuals seeking help who end up in offices or gyms or who knows where else that don’t get the help they need.  You might not think it’s a big deal, but it is and here’s why.

Sitting across from me on the blue couch in my office, the mom says- “We wanted to nip this in the bud before it got serious.”   Meanwhile, her listless and pale daughter squirms with anxiety.  After finishing a thorough nutrition assessment, it is evident that their idea of early and my idea of early are two different scenarios.

Holiday Enjoyment Guide 11/13/2013 11:08:13 PM

I’m tired of all the blogs and articles on surviving the holidays.  It makes what is supposed to be a very exciting, joyous time of the year sound like a horrible experience that you just need to get through while barely hanging on.  People survive cancer, wars, famine, and natural disasters.  How does surviving get attached to the holidays?  Yes, I know that there is a lot of stress around the holidays, and I realize that it is a difficult time of year for many people.  I acknowledge that there are certain life events that make the holidays harder, however when there’s a holiday survival guide for everything under the sun, it has to make you wonder what is so bad about the holidays that we just need to survive?  I can’t help but wonder- what would happen if we shifted our focus from surviving the holidays to actually enjoying them?    What if changing the way we think about the holidays affected the way we felt and reacted too?  With that in mind here is my Holiday Enjoyment Guide (it sounds better already):

Whenever I tell people that I specialize in eating disorders I often hear a joke or an inappropriate comment in return such as: America has an eating disorder, it’s called Thanksgiving Day, I have an eating disorder it’s called powdered doughnuts, I wish I had a touch of anorexia, Man I wish I had that willpower.  Every time that I hear these comments it assures me that people do not understand eating disorders.  They only continue to perpetuate the problem and prevent people from getting the help they need.  Eating disorders are brain based biological illnesses and are the deadliest mental illness.  Learn to separate fact from fiction with three common beliefs about eating disorders.

Do you know the diet dance?  It goes like this: buy a diet book, buy some supplements, go on a diet, lose five pounds, gain it back, plus 3 pounds more.  Go on another diet, with different rules, lose 10 pounds, gain it back, plus 5 more.  Go on another bigger, stricter, more severe diet, lose 20 pounds, gain it back, plus 10 more!  Over and over this cycle repeats with weight continuously creeping up not down.  This is a familiar dance and a costly one too.  In 2012 Americans spent 61 billion dollars in the weight loss market alone.

Many of people believe that as a dietitian I am a member of the FPD- the Food Police Department.  A lot people think that dietitians are the food police, going around passing judgment of people and what’s on their plate or in their shopping cart at the grocery store.  Others think we take the joy out of life by forbidding juicy, mouthwatering burgers and smooth, creamy turtle cheesecake and replacing them with carrot sticks or tofu instead.  Even worse, others think that we look at people and judge them based on their size.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth!  Yet it’s almost daily that I hear- “Don’t judge me about what I’m eating.” “Don’t look at my shopping cart.” or “Don’t judge me based on my size!”  This is not what dietitians do!

Recently the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the professional body for Registered Dietitians) announced that dietitians now have the option to use RD or RDN to represent the dietitian credential.  The RDN credential stands for Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and further emphasizes the nutrition aspect of a dietitian’s training and expertise.
