Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious and complex diseases that affect men and women of all ages.  People with eating disorders can be underweight, normal weight, or overweight so you cannot tell if a person has an eating disorder just by looking at them.  If you have an eating disorder or are concerned about someone you think might have an eating disorder, a dietitian can help.  Eating disorders are complex diseases and a treatment team might include a physician, a dietitian, a counselor, and a psychiatrist.  A dietitian is an integral part of a treatment team and can help you normalize food behaviors while rebuilding a healthy relationship with food.  At My Signature Nutrition we specialize in the treatment of eating disorders and help people with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, eating disorders not otherwise specified, and disordered eating.

The following questions are a simple screen that you can use to find out if you (or someone you care about) may be struggling with an eating disorder.  Please note: These questions are not intended to diagnose eating disorders or any other disorder.  They are designed for initial screening purposes only.

  • Do you make yourself sick because you feel uncomfortably full?
  • Do you worry you have lost control over how much you eat?
  • Have you recently lost more than 14 pounds in a three-month period?
  • Do you believe yourself to be fat when others say you are thin?
  • Would you say that food dominates your life?
If you answered yes to two or more of these questions it is possible you have an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are treatable.  We understand that seeking help for an eating disorder can be very difficult and scary.  If you, or someone you care about, needs help don't delay in seeking treatment.  The sooner you reach out for help, the better you will start to feel.  If you are unsure if you need help or if you are questioning your thoughts and behaviors, we can provide clarity to your situation so that you can put your mind at ease, get help if needed, and feel your best.
